Is Your Packaging Helping or Hurting Your Sales?

Is your packaging working for you — or quietly killing conversions? This 10-point checklist reveals how to assess and fix packaging that looks good but doesn’t sell.

A 10-Point Checklist for Founders Ready to Scale

Your packaging is more than just a container — it’s a silent salesperson.
It’s the first impression on shelf. The decision-maker in a split-second scroll.
And if it’s unclear, generic, or misaligned with your brand... it’s costing you.

At Major Assembly, we’ve worked with dozens of CPG, beauty, wellness, and cannabis brands to fix packaging that looks “nice” but doesn’t convert. This checklist is designed to help you identify what’s working — and what’s quietly holding your brand back.

The Packaging Performance Checklist

1. Can someone understand what your product is within 3 seconds?
If your category, use case, or key benefit isn't instantly obvious — you're losing buyers.

2. Is the visual hierarchy clear and intuitive?
Customers scan, they don’t read. Your packaging should guide the eye through the key info fast.

3. Does the aesthetic align with your ideal customer?
Your design should speak their visual language — not yours.

4. Would your product stand out on a crowded shelf or marketplace grid?
If your packaging looks like everything else in the category, it disappears.

5. Do your materials and structure support your price point?
Premium products should feel premium in hand.

6. Is it optimized for your channel (DTC, retail, Amazon, etc.)?
What works online won’t always work on shelf.

7. Does your packaging communicate your brand values?
From sustainability to lifestyle — customers want to know what you stand for.

8. Is your product recognizable after one use?
Memory builds trust. Repeat buys depend on it.

9. Have you tested it with real customers?
Your team’s opinion doesn’t count. Test before launch.

10. Would someone want to photograph it or share it?
Packaging should inspire—not just protect.

If you said “no” to 3 or more of these, your packaging is likely costing you shelf space, conversions, and brand trust.

But that’s fixable.
